Professor Mohanty has more than 30 years research experience in the areas of Machinery Condition Monitoring and Acoustics. Professor Mohanty’s research group does both fundamental and applied research. The research activities carried out by the group is done with an objective of providing immediate solutions to an engineering problem in hand. Some of the current research activities in the areas of acoustics are in the development of new natural acoustical materials, acoustical meta-materials, acoustical holography, micro-perforates for noise control, acoustical source localization, under water acoustics, signal processing. The research in the areas of Machinery Fault Diagnosis are in the areas of Fault Prognosis, Incipient Fault Detection, Instantaneous Angular Speed Estimation, Empirical Mode Decomposition, Model based fault detection, Remote sensing, Wireless Data Acquisition and Motor Current Signature Analysis.
The desirable prerequisites for any student wanting to carry out research with Prof. Mohanty’s group must have had course in Basics of Engineering Acoustics and Vibration, strong in mathematics in the areas of ordinary differential equation, Matrix algebra, Fourier Transform and Numerical Methods. Prospective students should have had adequate software experience in software packages like MATLAB, ANSYS, LabVIEW, AutoCAD and Solidworks. The students get to do experiments in the state-of-the-art Acoustics and Condition Monitoring Labortory. Details of the facilities available can be found at www.iitnoise.com.
